Sustainability Program

The 3M Open is committed to doing our part to do more, and we believe it’s our responsibility to lead. Protecting our shared environment and conserving natural resources ensures a vibrant golfing future for all to enjoy.

For the 2021 tournament, we have teamed up with vendors and partners to help us advance our sustainability initiatives with a focus on waste reduction, and avoiding the landfill where we can.

Applying science to improve lives

3M has a long-standing commitment to sustainability and it is a core value of our company. Our consistent industry leadership is evident in the establishment of our ground-breaking Pollution Prevention Pays program in 1975, which continues to thrive, as well as more recent initiatives, including our shift to renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing circular solutions and growing our skills-based volunteering programs. Together with our employees, customers, partners, governments and communities, 3M is committed to a science-based, collaborative approach to solving shared global challenges and improving lives.

At this year’s 3M Open, we will be highlighting sustainable solutions ranging from water filtration, recycled insulation, construction materials, and more.

At the 2021 3M Open, learn how Nature Valley is committed to a more recyclable future. We’re starting by making our Crunchy bar wrappers store drop-off recyclable. But that’s only our first step toward making all of our packaging fully recyclable by 2025.

Stop by Fan Village to sample Nature Valley Crunchy products, then start your Crunchy wrapper’s journey to a new life by recycling it in the designated Nature Valley recycling bins. Learn how these wrappers will turn into playground sets, fences, and furniture - all things that can help you make the most of your outdoor spaces.

The 3M Open Sustainability Crew will be collecting Nature Valley Crunchy wrappers all tournament long as a commitment to reduce the 2021 3M Open’s material waste.

Once you leave the 2021 3M Open, don’t stop recycling your Nature Valley Crunchy wrappers! Be sure to find a Nature Valley store drop-off location at a store near you!

Experience the TimberTech® Backyard at the 3M Open

When it comes to outdoor living, innovation and inspiration are at the heart of all we do.  The AZEK Company is the industry-leading designer and manufacturer of beautiful, low maintenance and environmentally sustainable outdoor living products, including TimberTech® decking and Versatex® and AZEK Trim®.  We use technology to create decking and railing for your backyard that looks like natural wood, but is more sustainable (i.e., made from up to 80% recycled material), longer lasting, and lower maintenance.

We believe that doing the right thing for our communities, our employees, our customers, our stakeholders and the planet is the only way to do business. We have a unique ability to positively advance a circular and sustainable economy and continuously lower our carbon footprint through the sheer scale of our recycle consumption. In 2020 for example, we diverted approximately 400 million pounds of waste and scrap from landfills, an increase from approximately 290 million pounds in 2019, and approximately 54% of all our extruded materials were manufactured from recycled material inputs in fiscal 2020. Approximately 80% of our capped composite decking and 50% of our capped polymer decking is made from recycled materials and the majority of our products are recyclable at the end of their useful lives. We won’t stop there. In February 2021, we announced our ambitious goal of using 1 billion pounds of recycled material annually by the end of 2026, further demonstrating our commitment to accelerating the use of recycled materials and continuously reformulating and innovating to bring new products to market with increased recycled content. Because moving toward a brighter, more eco-friendly future? It starts today.

Join us at the TimberTech® Backyard where you can experience our products firsthand, play some fun backyard games, and learn more about our commitment to revolutionizing outdoor living to create a more sustainable future

NatureWorks is a global biotechnology company using plants to turn greenhouse gases like CO2 into the biopolymer we call Ingeo. We partner with companies around the world to transform Ingeo into a wide range of naturally advanced products like compostable coffee capsules, tea bags, and food serviceware as well as diapers, hygiene masks, appliances, and filaments for 3D printing. Because it’s made from plants, Ingeo’s carbon footprint is 70% smaller than petrochemical-based plastics and it enables the decoupling of materials from non-renewable resources.

NatureWorks is headquartered in Minnetonka, MN and we’re proud to be a sustainability partner of the local 3M Open event, which will have a positive impact on our community and in furthering the economic and environmental sustainability of the Twin Cities metro.

Look for the See Box compostable drinking cups made with Ingeo in tournament cabins for an example of Ingeo in use. Compostable food serviceware like these cups can be an important part of capturing food waste at events and diverting it away from landfills to compost. Diverting more food waste to compost reduces methane emissions from landfills and helps produce an important soil amendment that can help us grow better food and sequester more carbon in our soils.  We look forward to being a continued partner with the 3M Open in building a more sustainable future for golf.
